Detailed sequence for torquing head bolts

I'm getting ready to assemble my longblock this weekend, and I am looking for a detailed diagram on how to torque the head bolts down.

By diagram, I mean the sequence number of 1-17 on each head.
I do know that sbc's use 17 bolts per head.

Any diagrams, or links to one?

Don't have a shop manual? Every one I've seen has shown the sequence. Well.. the sequence starts in the middle..I hope I can explain this correctly. Actually.. I'll draw it sort of, if you're looking at the head from the outside it will go like this:

13 5 2 10
17 9 1 6 14

16 12 8 4 3 7 11 15

EDIT: I put spaces in it, but apparently they don't show up. You can still see how it works, though.

if you don't have a manual you don't need to be building anything except maybe a modle car

Ede is right. Even a cheapo Haynes manual for fifteen bucks would be a good idea if you have nothing.

I didn't want to add to the stupidity of the question by stating that my shop manual on rebuilding the small block chevy has come up missing.

I've torn the house apart trying to find it, and it hasn't turned up.

Vader, thank you for the diagram.

ede, thanks for the insult. Very well taken.

LOL, all is well.

I'm kind of low on money right now, so engine will wait another week.

I'm to the point where I just want to see the car running, but I'm in no big hurry.

ede, everything is cool.

Now if I could only find that damn shop manual.

Thanks guys

Amateur! I'm a BIG smart-*** MOST of the time... It's my goal in life.

If you really wanted to insult him you could have instructed him to put down the Honda manual and get the right one.

Rob't,

Don't forget to go through the order and bring up the torque to about 80% of the final spec, then back through the order for final torque. Of course, you're planning on cleaning/sealing the bolt threads first.

And here's a "Yogi-ism" for you - the manual is exactly in the place that you're not looking, so it really isn't lost.

This is true, lol.:sillylol:

I've already cleaned the threads of the block, and I had to purchase new head bolts. (long story)

Thanks for the hint, Vader

I'm gonna be putting heads on my engine sometime soon. What do you do to the head bolts besides clean them real well before you put them in.

Do I oil them? Thread sealant?

TIA

There are many different types of sealers out there for sealing head bolts, I go to the hardware store and get pipe thread sealer comes in a can with a handy brush, or I use ARP gray bolt prep.
