Code 41, and Distributor on new bird...

Hey guys. Picked up a new trans am for my brother today.... it's a s-box... but for $600, what do you want.

Anyways, the check engine is always on, and it's throwing code 41 at me-- which is:

41. Fault at cam sensor OR
Cylinder select error OR
Tach input error

The previous owner replaced the distributor with one from a '79 to illiminate all of the computer components. Why on earth he did that, i don't know, but does it sound to you like that would account for this "fault at cam sensor?" or is there another problem? Anyone have a good reason for illiminating the computer? I have the original distributor... after i go through and make sure everything is in working order on it, can i just put it back in w/out any other parts, or is there a separate computer control for it? Thanks for the help...
