running valve lash

im really skeptical about ajusting my lash with turning the push rod till it hits friction and then turn 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. what is the procedure for adjusting lash with your car running or adjusting the lash with feeler guages. is it the same as the chilton manual describes with adjusting the lash with the push rods. thanks for any information

Well, first of all there is no valve lash when using Hdy. lifters and I think you know that. I wouldn't even think of using feeler gauges? You can adj. the valves with the eng. hot and running, but what a mess. Do one side at a time and buy rocker arm clips to reduce or shut off the oil flow to the rocker arms. Start the eng. and loosen the rocker arm adj. nut until you here a tapping noise. Slowly tighten the adj. nut until the noise goes away and then tighten the adj. nut 1/2 turn. Adjust all the rest of the valves using the same procedure. This is the most accurate method for adj. valves when using hdy. lifters.

thanks that should help alot. some one told me that a piece of cardboard at the bottom of the head would be able to catch any oil and direct it back in to the head. would that work or does they oil shot out of the valves.

There is no valve lash with hydraulic lifters. It's called preload.

When you adjust the rocker to remove all the lash from the pushrod the lifter is just about to be preloaded. Proper preload is .030". This is equivalent to 1/2 turn on the rocker nut.

With each cylinder at TDC and both valves closed just tighten the rocker until you can't move the pushrod. I don't like the spinning method myself since you can still spin the pushrod when there's preload on it. Just gradually tighten the rocker until it just tighens against the pushrod. Then turn the rocker nut 1/2 turn and go on to the next valve.
