Question

I just recently built up my 305-LG4 but was really shocked at what I found. When we pulled the engine apart I had forged flat top pistons. Didn't those come in just the HO? Not only that my drive train is a 5-speed Borge-Warner, 3.23. I read somwhere that there were only so many made with this type of drive train, or are those peolpe just nuts?

The car is an 86 Firebird, btw!

Did this car come with a Quadrajet carburetor? Was the Edelbrock carb an improvement over that carburetor? How does the Performer RPM do for street driving?

Flat top - yes. All 3rd gen 305's had them from '85-on.

Forged - no. Cast aluminum only from the factory.

Were they the stock bore? Did you keep them in the rebuild? Are you sure they were forged?

305 LG4, M5, 3.23 gears doesn't sound all that rare. Apparently the Trans Am HO is. I assume this is not a Trans Am, the VIN 8th digit is "H", single snorkel air cleaner, small exhaust, 5000 RPM redline tach, etc.

No they ARE forged, the machine shop confirmed that they are forged.

Yes

Did you keep them in the rebuild?

Of course! They were in perfect condition.

The VIN is an H and I posted it is a Firebird. And the tach, on mine, does NOT redline at 5000 rpm, it is 6000-6500 rpm.

I'll just have to ask Pontiac.

Thanks anyway.

Are you trying to be cute..LMAO. YES! The Rochester in mine was junk!

How does the Performer RPM do for street driving?

Awesome.

The engine has really suprised allot of 350 lovers, which makes me giggle. Although I can not beat a really built 350, the car has outdone mildly built 350s which keeps me happy!
