Hey,
Ok i really need to get my 85 t/a to this shop cuz my inspection repair time limit is running out. ok heres the deal, failed the emmisions test, plus need new shocks but thats another story. so my ??? is what should i have checked while its there..i was gonna have them check compression and gaskets..basic tune up stuff... its a 305v8 code g by the way....should i have them replace heads and sh*tt as i wanna eventually change these out..
any tips, ideas would help:hail:

compression test is affected by many variables, leakdown is much better at pinpointing problems.
on an old engine like that, i wouldn't bother paying someone to just replace the heads, would send the whole engine assembly out to a machine shop to have it rebuilt. that will replace all the seals that may be leaking, along with getting the bearings, rings and heads in spec. is a different story though if you're doing the work yourself, remmanned heads are cheap, labor is not.

Do you know why it failed emissions? Sometimes something as easy as replacing the O2 sensor (not always included in a tune up at some shops- check with yours) can make a big difference in tailpipe emissions. Vacuum leaks, timing being off, having a miss at idle, all can cause tailpipe emissions to skyrocket.
Also, you'll have a tough time passing if the cat has been gutted by a previous owner.
