1989 Tran Am L98 1.6 Roller Rockers

Hey guys, I have a 1989 Trans Am with the L98 5.7, I want to install a set of 1.6 roller rocker arm, but i dotn really want to change my valve springs? Any suggestions if so what? Remember I have the centerbolt styled valve covers as that makes a difference. thanks in advance Matt Manglos

why don't you want to change the springs? at this point they have to be getting weak and wore out. a set from comp or lunati shouldn't cost over 50 dollars fro stock type replacements, but i'd go with aftermarket retainers too and trash the factory rotators.

I only have 65,000 miles on my car, and basically i dotn have the equipment to change the valvesprings on the car. If i were to change the springs, what would you recomend, and how would i go about doing that? As i recall you have a fitting like a sparkplug that fills the cylinder with compressed Air to hold the valves up while you change springs? Are there any roller rockers that will fit?

Although not suggested you can. I did for several thousand miles before I decided to switch cams. Then I made the switch to better springs. On a stock engine with low miles like yours I don't forsee there being a problem.

I used the Crane Golds with no problems. Most like the Comp Magnums. Both have rockers that are self-aligning which is what you will need. Only bad part is self-aligning is more expensive.

with a stock cam you'll only increase lift by around .030 to around .475. that's pretty much what i conmsider the limit with factory springs. i don't see any real problems keeping stock spring, but i do think it'd be better to switch while you're there
