V6 Fuel Problems
V6 Fuel Problems
Need a little bit of help. My friend's 89 RS 2.8 died the other night at while driving through an intersection. He was accelerating in 1st gear, about to shift to 2nd, and the car suddenly died. Coasted it into a gas station, and we were unable to start the car again. We let the car sit for about 5-10 minutes, and tried to start it again. It fired for about 1 or 2 rotations, then wouldn't show any life for another few minutes. Checked all the fuses, none were blown. Spark seemed to be pretty good. We opened the fuel line that comes up from the fender well, and there wasn't any gas coming out with the key on. We unbolted the lines from either side of the fuel filter (filter ony has 5000 miles on it), still no gas. We dropped the tank and replaced the pump in the gas station parking lot, replaced the relay under the hood, put the whole mess back together, and nothing still. Tested the wires that come out of floorpan and go to the connecter on the tank and only the middle wire had any electricity going through it, and that pegged the fuel gauge. Soon after this I noticed that when the key was turned forward, the service engine soon light wasn't coming on. I jumped the A and B terminals in the ALDLwith a short length of speaker wire we had, and the light didn't flash at all. I even tried jumping the A and G terminals which the Chilton manual says should turn on the pump and bypass the relay, and nothing happened. Does the fact that the SES light isn't coming on anymore possibly point to an ECM problem? The way I read the wiring diagram, the fuel pump powers from the computer, which can only be cut off by the fuel pump/oil pressure switch, and he had good pressure. I am pretty set in thinking that the ECM might have all of a sudden gone bad, but does anybody know if there is some way of detecting it since the SES light is no more? We're going to work on it again this saturday, since the car is in a gas station parking lot about 240 miles south of where I live.

Check the ECM/fuel pump fuse near the battery. On the RS it should be along the right inner fender. On a Firebird, it is on the left end of the radiator, since the batteries are on opposite corners in each model.
