Broken speedo
I have an '83 T/A with the LG4 305. The speedo/odo doesn't work on it. I was told that you can use a drill to test the speedo cable. Has anyone done this before, and if so, where do you detach the speedo cable? From the firewall or from the tranny? I have the T-5, if that helps. Thanks!
If you have the cable-driven speedo, the easiset place to test it is at the transmission. You can also remove and inspect/clean/lube the cable from there, or replace it if necessary.
If the speedo head works with the drill, and the cable is intact, you'll already be where you need to be to remove the drive gear for inspection/replacement.

You can a drill I'v seen that calibration test on a few web sites. But to do that that means ripping the speedo out of you dash. You shold most likely check the speedo gear and cable on the tail end of the trans first to save some hard work.

Will my Chilton manual discuss this sort of thing?

my chilton and hays manuals are back in NJ but I don't rember them having how to change the gear. I have changed them twice and it isen't that hard, if it's the driven (connected to the speedo), and it's alittle more difficult to change the drive(on the transmission output shaft)to change the driven gear, first remove the speedo cable from the tranny, then remove the 10mm (I think, I am sure it's metric, yeah, I hate metric too) bolt and clamp from the tranny and the "bullet" and speedo gear can be pulled out. one thing to note tranny fluid will start to pour out if the car is level- I put the rear of my car on a curb. When you go to the dealership to get your new gear make sure the new gear has the # of teeth and dont belive any
the dealership gives you about the wrong gear being the right one. to remove the drive gear you need to remove the tranny and the tailhousing. I reccamend changeing the driven gear and seeing if it works and if it works and if it dosen't go to sombody that has some MANUAL tranny experance, because removal of the tailhousing is very involved and there are small parts that are spring loded (anybody elts that has taken apart a T-5 knows what I'm talking about- you know the ball and spring on the bottem of the shifter also the keys on all the syncros)

Thanks for the detailed reply! :hail: I made note of everything you said, so now it's just a matter of taking a look at it & praying it's the driven gear. I'll keep you posted....thanks again.
