Mr. Gasket Sucks
I just wanted to complain about their products.
I bought their timing cover, which has no timing tab. So I had to have O'reilly's order their timing tab, which comes nowhere close to lining up like it is supposed to. None of the marks even line up with zero, so I can't even guess. Why would they make something that would never work??
I guess I will have to buy timing tape for the balancer. I have "0"marked on my timing cover, but that is it. Does the degree mark on the tape, line up with the zero on the timing chain to identify where it is set at?
Hope so.....

Mr. Gasket makes cheap junk. Some of their other brand names aren't quite as much junk but aren't quality either. In the future if you see Mr. Gasket don't expect much. I can't remember the last time I bought a product from them. I can't recall having ever seen their street scoop in person but the price tag scares me considering their reputation. Overall though their products tend to be low cost. I have been told by the old ones that once Mr. Gasket was top notch stuff. Maybe that was true, maybe it wasn't.

There are 2 possible locations for the timing mark. The "universal" timing cover, from Mr G or anybody else, is intended for the one at about 1:30. The stock balancer on a 78-up (or thereabouts) SBC is at about 12:00. So, if you use a chrome TC, you need the bolt-on style of timing mark and the balancer that goes with it. Problem is, if you put that on one of these cars, you can't seee the mark because the PS pump is in the way.
Moral of the story: don't waste your money on a bunch of chrome crap that accomplishes nothing, instead use it to make your car go faster, and leave the perfectly good things that are already there (like timing covers) alone.

Sounds like you just got the wrong timing cover for your application. Not to say Mr Gasket is the best, but this isn't reason enough to say they suck. The person who ordered it for you is the one to blame, if anyone.

Maybe true Rustynutz.
I am pretty sure it was the right tab though. I just would have to change the balancer to use that tab.
I am going to stay with the chrome timing cover, because it is already on, and the stock one was too rusted to see the timing marks. I measured and marked the stock timing cover to the chrome, and I marked where the "0" would be on the chrome cover.
Question: Could I just use timing tape on the stock balancer and line up the degrees with the "0" mark I made on the chrome cover??
