Does the smoke have a blue tint? It may just be oil from your valve seals. A blown head gasket may leak coolant into the combustion chamber, in that case your coolant level will be low, you'll get white smoke from your exhaust that smells sweet, and the combustion chambers which coolant is leaking into will be very clean, especially the spark plug in them.

A head gasket just separates the cylinder heads from the block, there are two of them in a V engine. Only coolant flows through ports in the gasket through the head and block, not oil. Since there is a large amount of labor in replacing a head gasket(removing the accessories, draining the cooling system, removing part of the exhaust, removing the cylinder heads), it can be quite expensive. You could probably remove your heads and have them rebuilt and ported, and buy yourself some decent tools to put them back on for the cost of labor alone.
