IROC Air Snorkel Question

Can someone tell me what that thing is on the air snorkel intake that resembles a spark plug (It is found on the drivers side of the snorkel) . It looks like something connects to it but mine is not. I have an '87 Iroc TPI. Thanks

What does it do? And not having it connected will it affect engine performance?

It may be the MAT. And yes you do need it, it wont run right. When I didnt have mine connected it wouldnt idle right and was harder to start.
