"Check engine" lights up.......NOW

Sorry 3rd genners, It's not on my Pontiacs, but on my 96 Ford Ranger 3.0 V6. Any ranger owners out there? I've been trying to sell this truck lately, now this warning light will make buyers even more concerned . The truck still seems to drive okay. Can I get this light out someway or how would I go about tracking down the problem? Ideas?

Scan tool. No other choice in the matter.

Most codes on newer cars (Fords) are o2, IAC, EGR, in that order. Thats if you feel like throwing parts at it... I'd get someone to check the code first.

Try the same thing that I used to do until I traded my wife's Escort in 2 weeks ago, just disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer. One time she drove right through some water that was so deep it was coming in through the doors, and it made the SES light come on, (it was practically brand new then,) and my mech told me the same thing, it was probably a momentary sensor trip that caused the light. I disconnected it, and didn't have that light come on for another 2 years.

Okay, Will try the disconnect first , then it looks like (manual says) an OBD-II scan is in order? Thanks Madmax and Kevin Irving
