Is there ANY way that changing a fuel filter can kill a fuel pump?

Yep, stupid question, I know... but after replacing the pump twice, and about to go on a trip, I've gotta ask. The filter's been on for a year, and I want to replace it. The pump has also been on there for a year. Say this pump is about to die... would changing the fuel filter "kill the pump the rest of the way"? I don't have time to drop the tank this weekend before a long drive... so if there's any remote possibility that a new filter can kill a fuel pump, I'll leave the old filter on.

Just wondering if anyone changed a fuel filter and had the fuel pump die. It doesn't make sense to me how it would happen, a new fuel filter should present less of a restriction to the pump, and might even "help" a dying pump, but I've got bad luck with pumps. I'm not getting any "signs" of a dead pump, either. I was going to check the fuel pressure yesterday but my engine was a little too hot.

Never had this problem in any of my F-bods, but I did have the problem in my Saturn. Granted it was a little differant. Took car to the dealer to get a new filter. They changed filter and told me it was the factory filter (at 185k mind you). They then instructed me that i needed to be cautious about my fuel pump because after working with a clogged up filter for so long, the fuel pump wouldn't be up to par. Sure enough, after the new filter, i had a little trouble starting ever since then. Just telling you to keep an eye out. I dont know how camaro's have the filter mounted, but if it on the inside of the tank, it uses the gasoline to lube and cool itself, so if you have ever went on 'E' a few times, could also kill a pump. Just some insight.

Thanks for the input, guys! Ede, I do have the fuel flow correct, I'll just make extra-sure that I get it correct today! Smitty, that's just the kind of situation I was asking about... interesting how a free-flowing, clean filter could "hurt" performance. My original pump probably died because I ran the tank near to E, and thought it was "cool" to run dry on hard turns. After changing the pump, I always made sure to have 1/4 tank of gas in the car, because it was such a pain in the butt job. So there's really no reason that my replacement pump died, and I had to replace it Again after 2 years.

I'm about to replace my right rear quarter panel (technically, the whole right rear of my car, I have messages up on the Body & Interior board), and it looks like I"ll be dropping the gas tank. That damned Borg Warner pump will be coming out, and an AC Delco pump will be going in! I'm not going to chance a dead pump again- now I don't trust Borg Warner anymore.
