Hard to say. Do a compression test. You may have cracked a ring.

You buy a compression gauge (or make one ), put it in the spark plug hole of the cylinder that you are attempting to get a reading for. Once it's in I like to disconnect the ign. coil and fuel pump. Then crank the eninge over a few times and ake a look at the gauge.

Good compression should be around 140-200 PSI (really depends on your compression ratio, pistions, heads, cam, etc.) and should be within about 10% of each other. That will give you a good idea. The needle should remain near the highest point for a few seconds at least, enough time for you to hop out of the car and take a look at the gauge. If it drops quickly or it never gets in that "good range" Then you have a problem. A broken ring like was mentioned, a valve that is off it's seat, a broken pistion, on a more serious side severly cracked block or head (unlikely). It any event if you do have a compression leak, it at least means the heads are comming off if not the engine out of the car.

Anyway go do that and getback to us with readings from EVERY cylinder. Godd luck, hope it's not too bad.

Jim

The way I usually do it is either pull the relay out of its socket or disconnect it right above the rear end (there is a weather pack connector right in the middle attached to the body right above the driveshaft.) I guess the fuse would work too though. duh. Sometimes I wonder about myself.

BTW, what kind of car/engine are we talking about here? TPI, TBI, Carb?

Sorry i've been out of town so i have not been able to check it. the engine is carbed and today when i started the car it fought me the whole way till if finally started then it started to die on me so i reved it and it reved up then almost died again so i went into gear and accelerated but it stuttered then it hooked up adn drove fine all the way home. Is this a problem that sound like it might be part of what i am smelling or just from the heat? thanks guys
