a few weeks ago i bought a 83 sport coupe camaro...it orginally came with a 2bbl 6-cylinder...a few owners ago somebody dropped in a carburated v-8..the guy i bought it from said he thinks that it is a 305 but is not sure....it is probably a 305 but i dont know what its from...it has a edelbrock dual plane intake and a 1" spacer to a holley carb...i think 500 or 600...my dad said i might be able to tell by the #'s on the block but if he is correct they are in the backof the engine....if there anyway to tell....please help me out guys!!?!

The only way to tell for sure is to get the #s. They should be on the driver side of the block. If not there should be some up front.

can you kinda point out the right direction of where to look? and will it distinguish between the different types of 305's in camaros or will i have to look at the heads or something for that?

Behind the driver's side head, cast on top of the bell housing casting. Nice, convienent place to look for it.
It will only tell you it's a 305, and perhaps approximately what year it was made. Part of the VIN from the original car is stamped in the S/N pad in front of the passenger side head (under the alternator - another nice place for it). Sometimes, you can glean a litte info from that.
The head casting number is under the valve cover. That might give you a little more information.
