Throttle response question for TPI
Throttle response question for TPI
Why is there a delay between the time when the engine seems to "kick in" and when I stomp on the pedal when cruzing at a normal speed? It also happens at highway speeds too. For instance, if I decide to pass someone I almost have to floor it to ge a response from the engine. When I stomp on the pedal I don't immediatly get a response from the engine till about a second later. Then the the rpm's shoot up and the engine is almost up to the point of being over reved. The engine and transmission have been recently rebuilt and I put fuel injecter cleaner in but it doesn't seem to help too much. Any idea's? I have a 305 TPI. Thanks alot.
I have about 3,000 miles or so on my last tune-up. My transmission is the 700 r4. Also, there is no hesitation in the car when in neutral; my car does ping though when the engine engine is thoroughly warmed up. I also recently installed k&n air filters, removed MAF screens, new radiator, and installed Hooker cat back system and Catco catalytic converter. After doing that it does have a quite considerible increase in horsepower but that delay is still there. It does not at all happen from a dead stop, only when I stomp on the pedal when cruzing at a normal speed and beyond ( 30 mph +). I don't know if this helps but I think the spark plug wires haven't been changed for a long long time, look pretty old ( wires are orange in color). Cant tell you what spark plug brand the shop used in the tune-up, assumed their all pretty similar. In addition, the delay happens whether the transmission is in overdrive or not. Thanks for everbody's help.

Sounds like your your eng is OK and the hesitation you mentioned is the delay the tranny is experiencing before it will downshift.
Have you adjusted the throttle valve (or somethimes called the kick-down) cable yet?
Does it shift really soft or really hard?

I have not done any adjustments yet. As far as shifting goes, it shifts just right, not too hard or soft. Concerning the delay in shifting, is it the throttle linkage that you guys are talking about? I looked through my Chilton manual but I didn't find too much about the throttle valve (kick down) cable. Maybe you could give me a page number pertaining to it. If the throttle linkage is the culprit, could I adjust this myself? But all in all, the transmission shifts very good, just that annoying delay sometimes. Interestly, my car had this delay before the transmission was rebuilt too. Just for curiosity, if this wasn't my transmission, what else would be causing this delay? Thanks again.

It's also an electronics thing. The comp just needs to be told to go into WOT mode at a lesser throttle position. Like the chip I have for my car improved the throttle reaction. The chip tells the comp I am at WOT a little sooner so there is less hesitation.

The TV cable connects the throttle lever to the tranny.
It controls how the tranny shifts.
Do a search on the transmission board for T/V cable adjustment.
The subject comes up frequently.
