In line pump

Has anyone replaced there in tank pump with an in line? I think my pump is going out and am looking for ideas. Also, if the fuel gauge isn't working could it cause the car to run funny. It's an 85 T/A with a TPI 350. Ever since the guage stoped working the car doesn't want to stay running. Any help would be great!
