I have found a rebuilt stock 400 short block. I am planning on getting vortech heads and wanted to know the best cam for to get. I will be getting a performer RPM manifold and hedders. How much hp/tq will i be getting?
Thanks for any help!
Thanks for any help!
I am looking at a similar setup. I am planning on using 5.7 rods, vortec heads, rpm intake, 850 carb, a comp cams XE-268 cam, and 1-5/8 headers. The Engine Analyzer program gave me these numbers:
RPM HP TQ
1500 104 363
2000 155 406
2500 203 426
3000 255 446
3500 304 456
4000 346 454
4500 386 451
5000 404 424
5500 398 380
6000 378 331
When we ran the XE-294 cam, performance dropped a bit. If you go with better heads, the larger cam will help. But in my opinion, the 268 is the best way to go. The 274 gained 6 hp but lost 5 lbs of tq. I did not test the next smaller cam. I am sure it will lose some upper end hp but you may gain more lower range tq. Hope this helps.
