Air conditioning compressor rattle in 91 Camaro

Hi,

I just bought a 91 Camaro RS with the 305 TBI. When I switch on the air conditioner a rattling noise comes from the compressor when the car is idling. The air conditioning seems to work ok but I am wondering if this rattle is common and what it might be. Thanks!

Kevin

Mine rattled last year and this year--so far anyway--it hasn't!

Don't know why. It might be that you need to add some A/C lubricant to the coolant mix. They come in one pound bottles.

So I guess (hope) it is not the "Death Rattle" of the compressor.

Thanks!

Make sure all the bolts holding the compressor to the bracket are tight. Mine used to do that because one of the mounting bolts was loose, and the whole thing would rattle.

Thanks for the suggestion about the mounting bolts. Could be that (cross my fingers). I found a couple loose bolts in other areas of the engine compartment.

Main shaft bearing is going bad. If it starts squealing stop using the compressor or you're asking for a seizure followed by "black death" and a real mess.
