actually the name is sort of like jello, brand name that's applied to a process. it's magnetic partical inspection. a part is magnetized and if there is a break in the surface new north and south poles are established and the small magnetic particles are attracted there. you see the particals and observe the discontinuity and evaluate it to see if it's detrimental to the intergity of the part. there are several methods used for MT inspection, wet, dry, balck lite, or a combination of these. draw back to MT inspection is the AC method won't pick up subsurfce discontinutites and the DC method is limited to 3/8" under ideal conditions.

lot of shops include it as part of the hot tank, or cleaning. PT testing, or dye penetrant testing is something you can do at home for 30 dollars or less. read up on it a little to understand the basics, it's very simple and easy to use. can buy a kit at a welding supply. i have a AC/DC mag yoke i use at home, plus the PT kit i nspray cans.

The local machine shop told me $60 for a hot tank/magnaflux on a set of heads I have. I was then told by guys on here that the price is high- and the local machine shop is well known around here and at Englishtown Raceway Park, so i think I need to find a place that isn't so popular.
