problems starting
What I thought was simple starter heat soak seems to now be something else. What happens is essentially like classic starter heat soak -- when it's hot the car won't restart.
When I turn it over, you can hear the starter cranking, but the interior lights dim and voltage rapidly drops when attempting to crank. After a few tries, the battery is dead.
Now if after I stop I don't attempt to start the engine at all for 30-60min, it will start on the first try, no problem. Or, if after it stalls I get a jump start, it will start, no problem.
I recently put a thermal starter wrap on to attempt to eliminate the heat soak problem. Maybe it's working, maybe it's not. It just seems odd to me that the battery would be draining after attempting a handful of starts. Perhaps the alternator isn't charging like it should and the battery only has so much juice? But if that's the case, why would cooling down affect this? I've read that heat affects batteries, but I'm not sure if that's what this is.
Guess it's time to find me a voltage meter.

It is time for you to join the club.
I have the exact same problem in mine... been trying to figure it out for the longest time. Hmmm...

update
I did some reading with the multimeter. It reads 14.25 with everything electrical I could think of running, and it holds steady +/- .03. I guess this means the alternator is doing its job.
Still confused.

Wish I could help you out with that info, but unfortunatly, I can not.
I am very frustrated with ym starting problem. I have $10,000 to drop into my IROC-Z or to sell the IROC and get a 69 Z29 with the $10k plus what it sells for. I am torn between the two mostly due to the fact that if I swap out the engine in the IROC, I fear that it will still have starting problems and charging problems.
More or less... all I want is to figure out why only starts some of the time. I hope that someone else can help you, becuase I know exactly what you are going through.

I have the same problem. I am looking at two options...
First I will try another new starter and put on of those heat wraps around it and hope that will help. I think I ready on another post that once your starter gets heat soak you will not get rid of it. So I will try the heat wrap with a new starter instead of just putting the wrap on the current starter.
Second option is a mini starter. Some of the guys have been writing that they have had good luck with the mini's. I will be about another $100. But it will be worth it if it fixes it.
Bill.
