oil pump question
oil pump question
I read some past posts, and it seems that every one recommends a Melling M55 pump, with a Mr. Gasket high pressure spring.
But then, everyone says don't go with High pressure. Doesn't the high pressure spring make it "high pressure"?
My last pump was high pressure, and one of the teeth snapped off of the shaft.
Also, how far away is the pickup supposed to be away from the bottom of the oil pan?
Thanks.

i shoot for 3/8" max off the bottom of the pan. i use the mr gasket spring and melling pumps the oil gauge usually pegs at 60 or so running. just put one in my truck engine i rebuild last winter, gauge is pagged all the time running and 30 at idle. i've put a lot of these in engines and never had a problem. i wouldn't run high volumn with out a deep pan and then i still wouldn't.

Right, the thing to avoid is a high-volume pump, not high-pressure. The stock volume is entirely adquate for any sort of stock buildup where the oil system is not modified; i.e. as long as you don't groove your main & rod bearings, drill your rods to pressure-oil the pin, run twin turbos, etc. etc., the stock volume is fine. The M55 plus the spring creates almost the same thing as the factory high-pressure pump used in the better motors over the years, for about half the price.
