Help! Ac Retrofit? VERY bad AC

Here is my dilemma. Last summer I wanted to get my AC working, since it hadn't for over two years, and since I needed to get it refilled I figured it would be a great time to switch to R134 (the autozone $40.00 switch) well, since there was no freon in their left... (We checked the valve no noise or pressure) and proceeded to put the oil and the R134 in.

Well, everything went in ok, couldn't get all the R134 in, but I guess your not supposed too.. Anyway we started up the car ran the ac, was blowing real cold, but than we noticed that the R134 was literally blowing out the back of the compressor, after about five minutes it had all leaked out, no more cold air.

My questions are:

1) I know I need a new compressor, will one from a V6 3rd gen (can get cheap at boneyard) work? Also what other parts should I get while I am at it?

2) Should I (Could I) go back to R12? Or try again with the R134... I know a guy at a dealership, that can get me R12 at cost.

I would like to get my ac working before hitting laughlin next week

PS Ive searched and searched and cant find anything similar.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

James

1. Don't know about the 6-cyl thing, I don't ever mess with them, but I suspect it would if you took all the brackets of and used yours. One from some other kind of car (full-size, etc) with a SBC will, and shouild come with the right brackets already attached. There's not much different from one compressor to another.

2. If you 've done the actual comversion, clean the oil out of your "new" compressor and stick with the 134.

Pay attention to where the refrig came out; you may only need a high-pressure cutoff switch or an O-ring, not a compressor.

I am taking it to my dealer buddy tomorrow, they are going to evacuate the entire system, I am buying a new compressor, and refilling with R12, $2.10 an ounce isn't bad compared to what everyone else is paying :-)

What does anyone else think?
