I have 2 305's and I beleive one of them to be an L69, but how do I tell them apart? Is there anything on the engine that would tell me, like the engine id#? One of them appears to have a stock alluminum intake if that helps, I was just guessing that's the L69 by just that, but then again I'm not sure.
The engine code for the L69 is G and the LG4 is H right?
How much better is the L69 over the LG4, or whats the difference?

They both got aluminum intakes.

The L69 has a better cam, slightly better exhaust and I believe the heads might have been a little better, not sure though. I'm sure RB83L69 could tell you for sure.

You can check the block # towards the back of the motor on the driver's side.

On the VIN codes, it depends on the year. In 83 like mine, L69 was "7".

It's not easy to tell from the outside. The blocks and heads are the same, and intakes were in some years; earlier LG4s had cast iron usually, but that's not universal. The cams are different, and in some years the pistons are different, which you may be able to see through a spark plug hole (look for flat-tops with valve reliefs vs. dish with no reliefs); in most years the L69 had an electric fan and the LG4 had a clutch fan, so look for a fan switch in the right head; the L69 in some years had "underdrive" pulleys, with a smaller crank pulley; in some years the L69 had a knock sensor, the LG4 didn't; if the exhaust manifolds are still there, the L69 has 2¼" outlets, the LG4 has 2".

That's about all I can think of. Some of those things, if they're missing (fan switch, knock sensor) it's definitely LG4, but if they're there, you'd need to know the year.

Depending on how far torn down the motors are, it may not make much difference, especially if you're going to have it bored and put in a new cam, the differences can easily be erased that way.

I think I did a pretty thorough job of erasing the differences on mine. Don't even have an "H" in the VIN...

Oh, Canadian are the only ones I've heard of that don't have an aluminum intake. Even had a '79 Caprice 2 bbl 305 that was Al.

I plan on rebuilding what I think to be the L69 because it's in much better condition, the one i didin't think to be the L69 does have dished pistons like you said RB83L69 I still have to take the heads off the other engine.

My LG4 had Electric Fan, Knock Sensor, and Cast Iron Intake. Mine is an 86 Tran Am. that motor is now gone.
