Top speed run failure...
Top speed run failure...
OK, I have a 1989 Pontiac Firebird WS-6. 305 TBI, I tried to get it to go fst today. BTW 700R4 and 2.73's. Well anyway, I was at about 115 still in 3rd gear at like 4200-4300 RPMS. Well as yall might know, the 305 TBI's made NO top end horsepower, there perk was a decent amount of torque. So here I am like redlining (almost) in 3rd, and Im like, SHIFT SO YOU CAN GET INTO A DRIVE GEAR!!!! And it suddenly like shuts off, and coasts. I dont mean the engine shut off, but it dropped to like 2500 RPMS and started coasting. Well, what I am asking is, is this the govenor that I hit? And if so, WHICH WIRE DO I CUT!!!
j/k cause I would really like to be able to go faster, just in case one day I had a... ummmm..... incident.

In my 89 T/A (5.0 tpi t5) I changed the rear end out to a 3.73... all the sudden when I shift into 5th and get back in it it shuts down (just like my 92 RS does) at around 115mph (the speedo is reading a lot higher)... it still wants to go up to that point... before I changed the rear out I could go past that point in 4th without incident... I know I need to re calibrate the speedo but this is an 89 tpi car... what the h*ll...

All cars have one. The Z rated cars came with one of 254. But I was talking to a friend that has a Z28 4th gen, z rated and all, and he had one of 118. The best thing to do is get the PROM redone and have it bumped up. If you cut the wire, doesn't that senser doe something with the tranny shifting? The prom is still the best way, but a toggle is a good short term.
