Just wondering who might have some certs around thidgen. I'll try and find some practice exams online for those to see how much they think they know. Dont get me wrong I'm not a know it all. I just know how the engine works. When You get into #s and compression thats where I needs to hit the books or just come here and ask.

Well sure , there is 1991TealRST-TOP guy is almost a mechanic , GM ASEP , I think he has another year left . Dan (Calicamaro) is a Gm mechanic I think , I know he is a mechanic .Camaro_c_hunter is a mechanic .TomP you might as well say is a mechanic .Karl (Ked85) really knows his $hit to , he's pretty close to a mechanic as well .

Im no expert , but I will tell you , I've learned ALOT from EVERYONE on this board , if the "what not to do's " when working on a car .

EDIT : OH Im sorry , I could have sworn I was on the V6 forum . Those are the guys that hang out mostly in the V6 forum . They come in the tech section as well .Shot , on this forum ( gen tech) I've seen mechanics coming out the wazo


On the gen tech forum , I dont know if Ede or Vader or mechanics , but if you read the post they reply to , they really know there $hit .

I'm licensed automotive and heavy duty. I can't remember numbers like that. That's why I have a bookshelf full of repair manuals.

I can belive how many people dont know what a operating system is. Anyway I'll look for some practice exams.

Automotive Technician Apprentice Diploma - 1980 hours

Tune-Up Mechanic Certificate - 1650 hours

Transmission Mechanic Certificate - 1760 hours

Front-End Mechanic Certificate - 330-660 hours

It's Easier to apprentice a couple of years and study for the ASE tests. Once I had my certification, I had a job in a dealership within a month. All you have to have is 2 years on the job to take the tests.

ASE Certified Auto Tech - 15 years exp. (last 7 under a shadetree)

in case anyone couldn't tell i'm a dumbass, mr. vader is a EE. i'm in the same boat as stephen, i can't remember a lot of stuff that most people do, but i know where to look or where to ask. i do believe i'm a fair mechanic and can usually hold my own. eletrical engine controls slow me down a bunch. i'm a fair engine builder and fabricator. i'd bet i have more tools and equipment than most of the members here, not that it proves anything, they'll sell it to anyone whether they can use it or not.

I'm the lead tech at a Saturn dealer. I don't have any ASE certs, but I have all the Saturn certs. What that really means is I showed up for class. I'm kinda the opposite of EDE. I understand electric engine controls but am having a hard time with some of the things on my IROC(no computer). My fabrication skills also leave something to be desired.

He can use my 2 step program..

Step 1: Cheer up
Step 2: Go out drink/party/go wild...

One thing I can tell you about Vader is he sure is one camera happy ****.

He's got a picture for just about EVERYTHING on our cars. I dunno if he finds them all on the net, or if he takes them all, or what, but I can tell you that if he needs to pick a career in life, it'd be an Automotive Instructor (if he's not already )

I know quite a bit about some things, and nothing about others. I'm not certified in anything.

But there's a man I know has never gone to any classes, never gotten any certs., but owns his own engine/repair shop and builds 500+HP motors all day long, AND services brand new cars.

One time I saw him adjust a 6pak on a Pontiac 389 BY EAR!!! The owner pulled up with the car spittin' and backfiring. He's all sad and says, "Can I get someone to look at my car? It's running like crap." Bruce walks over there, pops the hood and goes to town. He adjusted all the idle mixture screws, idle speed screws, and got all the throttle blades syncronized within 5 minutes and only used ONE little flat head screwdriver. (You know the one that all mechanics wear in their shirt pocket.) The guy that owned the car was standing there watching and says "How do you do that Bruce?" Bruce just shrugs his shoulders and says, "I don't know."

Just a few FORDSTAR classes short of my Ford Senior status. That's right - I'm a Ford tech I've got the basic ASE's - susp/steering - electrical - brakes/ABS - climate control/refrigeration.

I have my AC/Refrigerant license
if that counts.

And am currently in training at Mercedes Benz

GM ASEP/ apprentice/ C-tech........i sat for 2 ASE's but i failed both by 3 questions

oh well, the fall exam is around the corner

I was 1 year shy of completing my ASE training and 1 month away from being certified to work on Vipers. Only wonder what would come out of it if I'd stayed.

ASE moved their sample tests (my old link didn't work), I thought they deleted them, but here they are! I did pretty good on the Automobile/Light Truck's "Engine Repair (A1)" test, but horrible on the "Compressed Natural Gas (F1)" test.
