Are all stock third gen fuel pumps in the fuel tank??
Trending Topics
The early third-gens (carbed) had some problems with vapor lock.
One of the factory fixes was to use an in-tank mounted fuel pump in addition to the regular engine mounted fuel pump. Even on the carbed engines.

It was even done on the low-performance standard V8s.
My HO car only has the traditional block-mounted mechanical one. There was some sort of recall or campaign, I don't know the details, where they would add the in-tank one if you had certain things happen and complained. I don't think they left the factory that way (with both kinds of pump) but I could be wrong.
In fact, the only fuel-pump related malfunction my car has ever had, would just have got worse if there was another pump. When it gets really heat-soaked, the fuel in the pump will flash as soon as it passes the needle, and the car will flood massively... gasoline spewing up out of the vents and everything. It usually does it right after I park it on a really hot day with the AC on, get out and do something like run into a store real quick, jump back in after about 2 or 3 minutes, crank it up and try to take off. It will wait exactly until I am pulling across a 55 mph 6-lane highway, and then it will stall with me blocking as many lanes as possible. It takes about 2 minutes of cranking with the starter to get it to fire again, at which point it belches a huge cloud of black smoke and then drives on as if nothing had happened. "Premium" gas, with lots of low boiling point alcohol in it, is the worst.
