How to run 13.90s with a carb 350 in an 83 TA
Im pulling the 305 out of my 83 TA. As it sits, it is a bone stock LG4, 5-speed out of a 91 Formula, and 3.73's. As I say, it is all stock with 82,000 miles on it. The only thing that I have done to it is the gears, and Edelbrock ceramic coated headers and y-pipe, and a 3" Flowmaster catback. With this combo, I am running a best of 14.94@91MPH. My first question is, will the 91 T-5 and 7.5" 10 bolt hold up to the 350 at the track? My second question is what needs to be done to the 350 to put me in the high 13's consistently? Im thinking 9.5:1, L-69 cam, weiand action plus intake. The only thing i am undecided on is the heads. Now I know I cant go out and dump the clutch at 4 grand on slicks...but on street tires will it hold up to regular powershifting and such? BTW, I have to retain all of my emissions equipment and CC Q-Jet and such. But please help me out all you can. Thanks in advance.

Well, sorry to say I cant do that. I dont have the money at this point in time to just go out and spend $1200 on heads an intake and cam alone. As I said before, I have to remain emissions legal. Thanks for the idea, but Im willing to take other suggestions too. Thanks.
Is the 350 a roller cam engine?? In any event, none of the above parts are emissions legal. With the 350, you can gow with a little bigger of a cam then the L69. The comp cams dual energy 265 should work well, as for heads you can go with S/R torquers, aim for compression of 9 to 1. Any good aluminum intake will work, just make sure it has a E.O. number for emission reasons. As for calibration, you can get the ZZ4 computer and chip. They cost about $205, shipped to your door. This is just general information, check with the cam manufacture for some recomondations.
As to the T5, It won't last too long, even with street tires....

If this is your daily driver, don't speed shift it, it won't stand up to that for very long even behind a 6-cylinder.
I don't think the RPM package is a very good idea; it definitely won't agree very well with the computerized carb. It's an ancient design cam with too much "advertised" duration (makes the valves "leak" for large periods of time) for the amount of .050" duration that it has.
The Vortec heads would be OK if you could get an intake that had the EGR provisions for the exhaust hookup, and headers with that too. I don't see that being realistic on the budget at hand.
I'd recommend a set of used iron L98 heads, off this site's classifieds maybe, with a good port job; a Comp XE262 cam, in the kit along with the lifters, springs, retainers, timing set, etc. ; a set of their 1.6 steel roller-tip rockers (NOT stamped ones); and a ZZ4 intake.

About the T-5
I dissagree the trans WON'T hold up. I think that it WILL. I have a 100,000++ mile T-5 in my car behind a 300+ hp sbc 400. It has a Centerforce stage II clutch and a B&M Ripper shifter w/adjustable shift stops.
The trans has been in my car for over 5 years, first behind a 350 and for the last 2 years, behind the above mentioned 400. I have been running it at the local drag strip (on real street tires) for the last 2 years regularly every other friday night. I "powershift" every gear, every pass, at 5000 RPM. After all this abuse, I finally broke a shift fork (3-4) this summer. I replaced it for $12.00 and it took me a whopping 2 hours, in and out the door. I also road trip the car frequently, which is not hard on the trans, but shows that I have confidence that it won't leave me stranded.
I don't love the T-5, but it will hold up fine if driven properly. And you CAN powershift in a manor that isn't necessarily "beating" on the trans. The trans has done me well. I think that with thoughtful driving it will work fine for you.

just because the label on a box of parts says they are not emissions legal doean't mean they cant pass tthe sniffer test.....the engine in my sig is proof of that. absolutely no smog equipment, cept for a cat at the time, or computer on my car.

He lives in AZ... very different from OH... I know, I just moved from TN to CA, then to OH... in CA they looked at every single part, checked their part #s against a book, verified that every wire & hose was hooked up, checked a bunch of things for function, then ran the dyno test; AZ is similar.

Cheapest way to run 13.90's??? Check out the camaro in my sig. That car will run 13's easy. It ran 14.0 in very ****ty tune (as example by the MPH). And you could probably find heads like that free like I did. Only bad thing is with 305 heads its kinda hard to keep the engine cool, high compression! The cam is a comp 268 extreme energy.
