Spedometer problems

I was going down the road and my spedometer just stopped working, went down to zero. Anyone have an idea why and where does it go to, does it link itself to the transmission?

What year is your car? i have had 2 thirgen firebirds and both had electronic spedos. they connect to the computer that gets the speed signal from the vss (vehicle speed sensor) on the transmission. the vss normally plugs into the space where a spedo cable would be. if ur spedo is setup like this it could be bad spedo, bad vss or bad computer (probably not computer but it is possible.

I don't think camaros had electronic speedos until 90 and up. Could be a broken gear, broken cable, or a bad speedo.

Also I forgot to mention, when the sped. stopped working my check engine light comes on. And if I run the car it will come on in about 5 min, but I don't have a code reader yet to see what's wrong
