Got another motor today :)
today my uncle gave me a 302 DZ block from a 69 Z28, its a 4bolt and im wanting to build a 383, but im not sure i want to do it to this block cause of what it is u know, can someone tell me about what it is worth, its just a block with mains, no crank or anything, thanks
if in fact you have a DZ block DON'T DO ANYTHING TO IT. sell it to someone restoring a z/28 that needs it. you can use any run of the mill block for a 383. there isn't anything truely special or magical about it. it's just a 4 bolt main 4" bore like millions of other SBCs. you'd get enough money out of it to buy anything you wanted as far as blocks go.

If it's really a "numbers matching" 302 block, DON'T build anything with it, put it in Hemmings or something, and sell it to somebody looking for one of those. Run the stamping #s on the pad at the front pass side to find out.
If on the other hand it's just a run-of-the-mill 4" block from who knows where, and just happens to be the same casting # as the one they built 302s out of, then you can of course make it a 302, 327, 350, or 383 just by your choice of stroke. Without the crank, and if the numbers say it was a 350 out of a 74 truck or some such, it's just a 4' block like any other. While I'm not going to call anybody a liar, it's a little like the "motor out of a Vette" thing: it usually can't be proven, and it's usually at leas a bit of an exaggeration, and the actual value of the claim even if true is somewhat doubtful.
