Power Chip

How many horsepower will a Hypertech Performance chip produce on my 1984 Firebird with a 5.0L 305 4 barrel carb

Not much, maybe ~10hp if your stock software was way out of whack.

Most aftermarket chips that have been disassembled show only a few degrees of timing and a wee bit of fuel added, fan temps dropped a few degrees, and that's pretty much it.

With your engine, the big areas for improvement are the heads, cam, and exhaust.

I agree with Kevin. In fact, for compu-carb engines of the mid-eighties, the computer did very little. An eprom is likely to make no difference whatsoever.

I would go to the "Carb Board" and discuss "other alternatives" to tuning, besides the eprom. You have the last of the cars where you can accomplish 95% of your tuning through mechanical methods AND it's effective.

It's more with the EFI cars that the "tuning" is more effectively done inside the eprom rather than by "alternative methods". And, for the most part, the "alternative methods" do more than an "off-the-shelf" eprom. You need either a custom eprom or (better yet), burn you own to get the maximum benefit.

I has an ADS stage 1 chip in my 85 LG4 auto TA and noticed a slight increase and power and a higher shift point. Not bad for 89 bucks, but don't expect a substantial gain.
