i own an '89 firebird and im curiouse as to what i should be looking for when trying to figure out whether my air needs a charge or the "box" itself is busted and needs to be replaced.

If you turn on the A/C you should feel noticeably cold air. Keep in mind that certain factors may make the car seem like its not getting cool inside fast like hot weather inside and outside of the car as well as a dark interior (absorbs heat) and T-tops (turns the inside of a car into a glass oven.
You can always take it to a A/C expert to get your system tested. Better yet, if you know someone with some pressure guages they could probably check it out for you for little or no cost.
