maximizing power output

im tryin to totally maximize my engines power potential with what i have already.

350 4 bolt main standard bore.
l98 heads stock
summit cam - sumk1102 204in/214ex @.50 .420in .442ex lift 112 degree lobe sep.
stock tpi setup

i also have 3.27:1 rear gears and stock 700r-4.
im going to put a shift kit and a higher stall converter(1500-2000, not sure what exactly just yet.)

im planning on hedman shorty camaro headers. to add to this equation as well.

now what would be best to do with this setup as far as porting tpi and heads is concerned. or would i be a little better off with the summit cam - sum-k1103 214in/224ex @ .50 .442in/.465ex 112 degree lobe seperation.

in the summit catalog they do not specify a rpm powerband for these cams. but they have a small sidebox "how to pick the right camshaft" and says cam intake @.50 190to205 will be idle to 3500 rpm powerband
while 206 to 220 will be 1500-4500
so should i go with the sum-k1102 idle-3500rpm
or the sum-k1103 1500-4500 rpm.
will using the bigger cam of the 2 need any adjustments to the heads or will it be fine the way it is. i also plan on gettin new compnents for my heads. but i have not planned that far yet. i need to get this all sorted out first.

please note.. i do not have alot of money. i also do not want any different parts than what i have. this is my daily driver and i have to pass a real strict emissions test.

i am buying an 83 camaro soon to build a complete monster out of because 83 and earlier model cars are emissions exempt. so the big cash will go into this.

Here's my advice to you!

Your stock TPI setup needs tobe upgraded!

The cam you have now *shouldn't* give you too many issues. HOWEVER, i would almost recommend with going to a crane compucam or some sort of equivalent, a compucam 2040 would do pretty well, and give you some wiggle room to go quicker with some extra mods! It doesnt need to be a compucam, but you will want to speak with the company you buy the cam from to make sure it is going to work well with the long tube runner design from the TPI. A big issue with the LTR design is keeping the cylinder pressures up. Picking a TPI cam is a bit more tricky that a carb setup (much shorter runner length!) One of the better parts about the compucam is that it will work slightly better with the tpi, and with the computer.

Any exhaust work you do will be worth the effort, and of course working the heads over is worth every penny, they need all the help they can get!

BTW on the convertors- stock on the L98's tended to be around 1600! i would wait on the convertor, especially since they are one of those things that you pay for what ya get on... there isnt much sence in changing the convertor unless your putting in a good one, or really need it- and with a decent emmisions cam, your not going to need the higher stall convertor.

i already have 3 inch flowmaster exhaust. i will be droppin in a high flow cat if i get a chance. i was thinking of the possibility of running a small amount of nos. is it possible or would i need beefin up on certain parts as to not destory my engine. if the stock stall is 1600 then im gonna go with the 2000rpm stall.
