Possible distributor problem?

O.K. had the 700r4 with 2800 stall behind my 355 with a 3.42 gear set. Have an HEI dis. with the DUI cap and rotor, Moroso ignition module, vaccum advance removed and had it spun balanced to 9000rpm with all timing in by 3000rpm. Now with the 700r4 TOTAL timing was 26 degrees-that where it ran the best, I know that's low for a small block but that's where it liked it, after I installed the new TH350 with a 3500 stall it barely ran at 26 degrees total timing, ran it up to 36 total and now it pulls exellent, BUT...now in first gear it'll go like crazy up to 4grand then stumble around and slowly work it's way to 5 grand then it's back to pulling like crazy again. Shift into second and the tach goes to 6500 quickly and smoothly same with 3rd gear. Now why would it only be 1 gear that I experience this "delay". We're thinking cause it spins up faster in first gear that there may be a problem in the distributor when spinning up quickly as it naturally takes a little longer in 2nd and 3rd cause of the overall gear ratio. I've had the timing with the new tranny at everything from the original 26 degrees all the way up to 36 degrees it's at now in 2 degree incriments, with the same results, just accelerates better as a whole with more timing. Ideas? I am installing a new Mallory dis. and new Mallory coil my buddy has lying around for testing purposes and probably for the rest of the season if that's the cause, but if anyone has any insight I'd be interested in some theories.
