So am I right in assuming I can take my current cam along with a correct 87-up timming chain set along with a aftermarket cam button and every thing should be fine?
Well I'm going through the same dilemma right now. I dont think a regular cam button will fit an 87-up chain. I'm about 99% sure it doesnt. That's why you have to buy an older type chain and a cam to fit. Maybe someone with actual experiencve can chip in anc clear this out for both of us.

I may have to buy a button and see I guess. I will just compare it to my 350 and if I can I may just have the 87-up sprocket made to accomidate it. no matter what I will need the button and I already have the rest. I guess I will have to let every one know what I find.

I am bringing this back up to see why cant you use a roller cam retainer and turn it so that the ears are on a angle? by this I mean have one.. the left ear (while facing the front of the block) go between the two freeze plugs (for the oil passage) and the second would hang down a little then drill+ tape holes use spacers for the distance.
I already figured out factory lifters that fit the block w/correct hight! you can use the 3.1 -3.4 liter roller lifters which are the same diameter but, shorter than the v8 roller lifters. then you mill the side of each retainer bevile the edges of them and with a few trial fits every thing lines right up even the working hight for the two is perfect. the only thing I have not done yet is mount the hold down. I have been thinking that I can just tap in to the center oil passage and use spacers again with sealant on the threads and I figure worse case they seep some oil. No Problem right?
