How to set timing

I've tried the search and am still unsure how to set/check the timing.

I have a 88 camaro w/ TBI on a 305. Is there a wire that needs to be disconnected first? Where is the wire?

The engine was just rebuilt and put back in. It idles poorly and is pinging badly.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

You need to disconnect the brown/tan wire going to the 4-pin connector in the distributor. There should be a weatherpack connector protruding outside the wiring harness going along the firewall where you can disconnect this wire. Of course you need a timing light and you need to loosen up the distributor clamp. I believe you rotate it CCW to advance and CW to retard the timing. Last time i did i just set way advance (like 15 degrees base timing) and use my adjustable timing control to work from there. I believe the car has to be warmed up but i could be wrong.
