New engine bearings

New engine bearings
I put in new speed-pro competition crank main engine bearings. The instructions were kind of vague on oiling so i only oiled the crank side of the bearing. I was reading in a CHP magazine to oil the back side too which I did not. Two questions: 1. Will this hurt the bearings or crank, I will prelube before I start, and 2. If they HAVE to be oiled on the back, can I untorque and retorque the main caps without screwing the bearings up. thanks guys
no idea what you read but you never want to oil the back side of the bearing. if you used any lube of the contact side, or crank side, whatever you want to call it that's is good enough. i never worry about pre oiling and engine before i start it and have never had a problem and i've built two or three, maybe more.

Do not lube the back side of the bearings. Ha ha ha!
Put down that hot rod book too!!. They are dangerous.
It is a good idea to prelube the oiling system on your motor before you fire it up.

Another vote for no assembly lube on the rear faces of any automotive plain bearing shell.

Same here. NOTHING WHATSOEVER on the rear face of the bearings, and no fingerprints on the front. I drop them in some clean lacquer thinner before assembly, and put a few drops of oil on the front after they're in the block or cap.
I also don't bother with priming an engine, I just build them right in the first place and then don't worry about it. Although, I probably have built less than ede.

damn rb if you've built less than me vader needs to get one dollar from you, given the way you're counting.
as for cleaning and all that, i use brake cleaner and wear surgons gloves when i handle bearings, pistons, and rings and when i'm installing them. i use lubriplate 105 assembly lube, sort of a white grease and it sticks and doesn't drip off, so no need to prime.
