shoulder belt wont retract, is this a recall?
http://autotrader.com/research/model...&ac_afflt=none
i got this info on autotrader, my shoulder belt hasnt retracted since i have had the car, so will a pontiac dealer replace this for free? i have never heard of these other recalls, just the one about the seat belt buckle. if they wont fix it any idea on whats wrong? i have been meaning to fix it but didnt want to go through the trouble of taking the upholstery down and risk tearing it. any help is appreciated

I had the same problem on mine, it happened after a friend yanked it out to far.
take out the headliner, unbolt the seatbelt thing from the roof.
its been over a year since I fixed this, so these instructions wont be very exact.
do not remove the plastic cover that says "do not remove"
you will need to work on the opposite side of that.
I cant remember if there is a plastic cover on the side you need to work on, but if there is, remove it.
You will see a little gear thing in there, with a pin on it.
All you need to do is pry up on the pin, and the seatbelt will retract.

i took down all the upholstery and the assembly looks like it has exploded, i dont know what would have happened to cause it but i guess i will have to buy a new one, anyone know how much they cost or where to get one?

It used to be a recall, my 83 had to have it... don't know if it still is or not...
There's a site that lists all the recalls that there are, it's part of the DOT IIRC, try searching for that, if it's still active there will be some kind of a number for it. It's a safety issue, I don't think those ever expire, but I could be wrong. If you have that type of info it's alot easier to browbeat the dealer into doing it at no charge to you.

It it looks like the coil spring has exploded everywhere then you have the problem that's covered by the recall. I used to have the information for it somewhere but I don't know if I still do. I just fixed mine myself anyway. I coiled the spring back up inside the plastic cap and then secured the cap with a piece of bent welding rod.
