Push rod, rocker arm spring clearance
Push rod, rocker arm spring clearance
I just changed the head gaskets on my LG4. Now how much do I tighten the rockers. Is there some formula, I heard you turn the pushrod and tight until you can't spin the pushrod anymore. I also heard you lift the pushrod up and down while you tighten until you can't tighten anymore. I did the first method and it sounds like it want's to start but won't. I know the timing is on.
You've probably got them too tight. When you adjust valve lash you want to do it when the lifter of that valve is on a flat part of the cam lobe, where the valve is fully closed. About 75% of each camshaft lobe is flat, so if you adjust them all at the same time at least 25% of them will be adjusted incorrectly. There is a way to know which valves to adjust at certain engine positions, but I have found it easier to just adjust them all at the same time and turn the engine over a few times, each time adjusting loose ones, to take care of any left over.
You want to back off all of the adjustment nuts until the pushrod spins freely. Then tighten the nut until there is drag on the pushrod. Drag is when you can no longer easily spin the pushrod between your fingers. This is zero lash. From here you want to tighten the nut one half turn more.
If you want, you can look up procedures for adjusting valve lash on manufacturers websites, but they overcomplicate things. If you adjust all the valves at once, turn the engine over a quarter turn and readjust, then repeat a couple times, you're sure to get them all correctly with minimal effort.

get it close like you were told above then start the engine a loosen the nuts untill the rocker ticks, tighten till it stops then go another half turn. do a search there's got to be hundreds of threads about this.
