Is it possible to re-drill axles for a new bolt pattern yourself??

I just got a 10 bolt 8.5 3.42 posi rearend from a Caprice for my grand prix..........everything bolts up fine besides the fact that the rear is exactly 2 inches wider........but the bolt pattern is 5 on 5!! A friend said you could use a rim to make a template, and simply drill the hole yourself and install some studs. what do you guys think? Anyone try it? I guess the only other option is new rims...........NOT!

i wouldn't be afraid to do it. you'd want a drill press so you could have the flange flat. i'd use a divider to mark the circle and then use the divider to maker the hole spacing and not try to transfer the holes from a wheel. you'd have to know the diameter of the splined section of the stud and drill the hole to match it.
