IROC stalls when driving...but only sometimes...

For the past couple of weeks now, I have been having a problem with my 350 TPI IROC. It drives fine when it is cold or hasn'e been run for a while. Every once in a while when it is hot though, it will stall while I am driving. I don't get it. I checked the TPS the other day and it was at .69, so I adjusted that back to where it needs to be. The car seemed to run better than ever, and I haven't had a problem with it stalling for 4.5 days when it stalled twice and almost stalled 3 times. Today it did it again. I put a new MAF in last year, and it isn't throwing any codes, so I am at a loss. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Matt

Wild guess is a loose electrical connection somewhere. Had a similar problem with my Grand Wagoneer and finally (!) discovered that even though the connector to the coil looked like it was secure, the clips inside were loose. Try wiggling the electrical harnesses while the car is parked and idling. Might be it (??).

Yeah, I was kinda thinking about a loose electrical connection. I just might have to take your advice and mess with it while it is running. Thanks

A loose connection at the ignition coil or distributor will normally make the car "chug" and die. It won't just cut out. Does it stall when you're moving, or when you come to a stop? Does it normally happen during the same time on a trip? Anything else can you tell us?

Have you checked the IAC motor yet?

When it dies, it doesn't surge or anything, it just dies. Usually it happens when I go to push the accelerator and there is nothing there and the engine dies. There is never any warning either. It has never stalled while just sitting there, but every once in a while it will run kinda rough for a few seconds and then it goes back to normal. Also, as soon as it dies, it always starts right back up and is fine. I don't have to let it sit or anything.

When it does happen, it does happen typically about the same time. Usually I have driven it long enough to get it warm and stopped for some amount of time. When I go back to it, it will run for a minute or two before it does it, then it is fine. However, it doesn't happen everytime I do that. Like I said, I can go a few days and it doesn't happen at all. I hope that helps out a bit.

That's definitely a weird problem you've got. I wonder if some ignition component is getting too hot. A couple things I could see causing that to happen would be the ignition module or pickup coil, although I have seen some strange problems with MAF cars that have no explanation

I am having a similar problem. But I also have trouble while the car idles. At a light or just when starting up. And I just replaced my alternator belt. And after that my problems started. May be coincidental. But I don't know.

Well my problem was just idle related and I still need to replace my spark plug wires and plugs. But I got it running decent right now.

Well, I think I have the problem fixed. It appears that it was my MAF...again. It decided to take a crap on me the other day when I was trying to start it. It just ran like...well...real bad and when I hit the gas it died. It finally threw a code and it was 33 and 34. Took the MAF that I bought in December back for a new and it has run fine ever since. Thanks for everyones help/ideas.

You may want to try cleaning your MAF next time and make sure the burnoff relay is working or the MAF will stop working again.

I don't have a stock style MAF. When I replaced it last year, the one I got is the style that has a computer style circuit board and stuff in it. There are no heat sink fins, no small wires, and there are only screens on the intake side.

There was no need to clean anything, it was only a year old and was not even close to being dirty. I replaced both of the relays in December when I changed the MAF, so those should be cool also. I think I must of gotten a defective one or something.
