a friend of mine was looking at these heads to use on his 355... its have 9.5-10:1 compression, the s/r torquer 67cc heads, maybe a little porting on them? a comp 268H or bigger cam, dual plane holley intake, and a 625 cfm road demon carb, msd ignition, its just a mild 355. i never hear much talk about these heads... we were thinking vortecs, but then wed have to buy a different intake and possibly work the heads for the cam, so were lookin at different options for now..

thanks

oh yea.. what about AFR heads? we never looked into those... where to buy them? expensive?

The Sportsman II's would be a better choice, especially with the bigger cam. I had the S/R's & they tend to rum out steam in the upper rpm's, without porting. The springs World uses, in a word, suck, figure on upgrading. The AFR's start at $1250 pr. @ www.martelbros.com or AFR direct.

I had a set of these on a 350 that made 380 hp (ported the heads of course) as said the springs flat suck for anything but the mildest cams. IMHO the sportsman 2s, AFR 190s or the pro toplines would be better. But I have no exp except for hearsay about the PT heads. The AFR 190s with a little massaging are absolutely outstanding on a street car (or limited race).

Once again, the springs are crap, Pardon me if i am wrong but i think Manley supplies these. Upgrade to Comp Cams 981 springs. The S/R torquers are a little rough out of the box, mild porting will help alot. I put together a 355 just like you mentioned but with a edelbrock rpm intake and carb, nice drivability, very torquey, good power. This is in a 2nd gen camaro with a TH350 and 3.42 gears.

unless he could find them used or dirt cheap, maybe we will look into different ones... lol these are in the 760ish price area, so maybe well figure the budget into giving us a little more head way and maybe AFR's... hhmm... hahaha

what kind of power or times was that 2nd gen you built making/running? is the 625 cfm holding back anything... we figured a daily driver needs a little driveablility... much different than a 750?

Sorry,no timeslip. I done this motor for a friend over three years ago, we drove 2 hours to get a time only to get rained out and just have not been back. It is still running strong, only problems have been the springs which have now been replaced. His motor has the 750cfm carb but based on other engines like this i have done a 600-650 will do just fine if not better. I do not have a dyno so my guess is that this combo is good for at least 330hp.

You might want to look into the comp XE262H, I really like this cam for a mild 355 and S/R torquers or vortecs.

I installed an All Chevy crate motor built with
the SR Torquers. Conservative cam, 222 / 467 lift,
rest of specs in signature. Motor is about 350 hp
at crank and car went 13.50 on its first and only pass down the strip with no tuning.........

If you want iron heads, about the same price, and bronze guides, and better flow, look at the Dart Iron Eagles. You can get 180-230cc runners...200cc is the same price as the 180's and flow more than even the Sportsman II's. And come better equiped.

The valves are Manley Street Flo, the springs are anybodies guess.
