350, 305?

I was wondering if there is an easy way to tell if a firebird has a 305 or 350, other than the 350 will be an auto. Is there some surtain thing to look at in the vin # or on the engine it self. Thanks for any help in advance.

The 8th digit will be an 8 for a 350, I'm quite sure.

Depends...

I think it is Vin W for 350 and Vin 8 for LB9 and Vin E for L03.
Oh hell, my car is a Vin E and it has a 350 in it.

You could look on the block for the casting number. Another way to find out is take it to the drag strip. If it runs 14's it's a 350, if it runs 16's or higher it's a 305.

Ok I hear you guys on here say these engine names all the time like LB9, L03 but I am yet to know what they mean, so if you could also tell me about them, thanks.

it depends on if it is the original motor or not. if it is, buy a chiltons (not a haynes) and read your vin and use the chiltons to decode it. if not, you have to look for casting numbers to be sure.

as for the codes, they were different motor options. I dont have any papers in front of me but I know the lg4 is a 305 carb. the l98 is a 350. I dont know off hand the other codes. I believe they are 305s but one is tbi and the other is tpi. there are different hp/tq ratings for all of them. you just have to find out what motor you have.

depends on what year the car is, and if it's packing the original engine.

look for these codes on the SPID

LG4 : base 305 engine, carbed. produced from 82-87. vin code h

L69 : high output 305 engine, also carbed. produced from 83-86 in the f-body. vin code g

LB9 : fuel injected 305 engine, tuned port. produced from 85-92. vin code f

L03 : base 305 engine, tbi fuel injected. produced from 88-92.

L98 : 350 engine, tuned port. produced from 87-92 in the f-body. vin code 8

to check the vin for the engine, look at the eighth digit.

I believe he is refering to the card inside the center consoul. There will be a list of all option. One of the above codes will be in the mess of numbers somewhere.
