Fuel Filter help needed ASAP

My car has been stumbling at idle, I checked for vacuum leaks but found none and narrowed it down to the fuel filter.

I went to change it today and it looked shot. The gas came out with dirt in it too, looked old and original (100k miles on it).

Anyway, i put down the old one and grabbed the new one. The old one rolled away before I could check to see what way it goes.

I have the lipped side sticking out so it goes towards the front if the car, and the round side facing in towards the frame going to the tank.

Started my car and it began to stumble again, worse though. I thought I might have guessed wrong and switched it around and it died. I now have it switched back but my car still dies in park and stumbles. I now am clueless as to what way to put it.

My car was low on gas before so I got $2 worth and put it in the tank and tried it the first way. It seems to run fine but still dies at park after about 20 seconds or so. Could it be I ran out of fuel the way I had it the second time and just thought it was wrong.

Anyway, if anyone can just post a picture it would help. I checked my Haynes book but it's usless for fuel injected, there's only 1 picture and it's not for my car. I have a 90 rs fuel injected v8 tbi for the record.

Take a close look at the replacecment. The spare I have has the flow direction inked on alongside the part number label. Your's may be printed or stamped on as well.

Just for reference, most TBI filters I've seen have the rolled/crimped end toward the discharge fitting, and the plain/stamped end toward the inlet fitting.

I'm still not sure

I included a picture. The discharge side labled "OUT" is shown in this picture and is facing towards the pass. side of the car going to the engine. The round side is facing the frame wall and goes to the tank. I thought this would be correct, it goes 'in' through the filter and 'out' to the front of the car... but my car now dies after about 20 seconds of running.

Here's the pic.

Thanks for helping too.

(Oh, and in the picture I took it direct, so the left side is driver, top is towards front of car... I already took the car off the stands so I snapped this pic by reaching under and guessing so sorry for the bad quality)
