Engine Noise And Check Engine Light
Since my last question got answered so fast I thought you guys might be able to help me with this one.
Just recently my engine has been making a noise best described as someone spinning a ratchet whenever I rev my engine. I'm guessing it's a lifter or something. Does that sound right?
What really gets me is that if I rev the engine high enough, the check engine light comes on and the noise dissapears. Whats that all about? Is the computer compensating for whatever is wrong or something?
Help!

I'm not sure what the noise is. It sounds like something in the valvetrain. I'd try pulling the valve covers off to see if anything is obvious from up top (broken rocker etc.)
Have you pulled the code from the computer yet? Check the FAQ section on how to do this and what the codes mean. The code might help narrow down your problem.

11,
Just a few questions:
What RPM is "high enough"?
Does the noise occur all the time? Only when hot? Only when cold?
Is the engine stock? (What mods?)
What is the error code set by the MIL?

I'm at college right now and left the car at home for fear of it getting worse so I can't check the codes. I can't remember the exact RPM, but I think it's probably around 3500. I'm going home this weekend so I'll be able to get the specifics on that stuff. I notice the noise as soon as I start the car and it's usually not long before the check engine light comes on so I can't say if it would still be there when it's hot. The engine is stock except for a power chip. I doubt that would have much to do with it.
