Magnets in Oil filter & pan?

Is there anywhere other than the drain plug that you can put a magnet to collect metal particles in your oil? Every little bit of protection helps.

I'd use a magnetic drain plug but I have on of those Fram Sure drain ones because I'm lazy and I'm tired of making a mess in our garage.

I suppose you could buy some of those naturally strong little magnets from radio shack and tape them to the outside of your oil filter. When you change the filter, just take them off and tape them to the new filter. I guess you could also do the same thing right around your drain plug so that when you drain the oil, the particles will flow out with the oil when you remove the magnets. I suppose you could also drill and tap a hole in the oil pan for a new drain plug with a magnet, but I think that would be taking it kind of far. I dunno, just some cheap suggestions I thought of, I don't know of anything you could buy specifically for that purpose. Personally I wouldn't worry about it too much though.

What do ya want to be lazy and unprotected or a little more metodical changing your oil and have some assurance. I've always run magnetic drain plugs, personally never fragged a motor, but my buddy went through 3 of them the last three races of the season. His 355 dropped a valve into the piston and pan was full of metal chunks, scored the cylinder and filter was full of the shiney stuff. The next motor was a 454 and I told him to buy the magnetic drain plug for $6 what the hell, Broke in the cam and raced the next morning, After the first pass something was'nt right so we trailered it, took the intake off and the lifter (hydraulic) had sheered off the bottom 1/4". Pulled that motor apart and the drain plug had tons of stuff stuck to it. 454 need hot tanked and rebuilt after that though. Major incidents like these it's not going to help, but for a daily driver, it'll help keep any little particles from finding it's way into the motor-gotta remember small block chevy's don't let oil go through the filter untill 1500rpm or higher, if you want filtration ALL the time you must remove the body from the block that the filter screws onto and weld the by-pass shut.

Other places so it can easily be cleaned? No but there are locations in the engine that work well.

A large flat magnet inside the bottom of the oil pan.

A couple glued inside the lifter valley.

Installing them will require engine disassembly but that's where they will catch steel and iron filings and small pieces.

A magnet still can't catch pieces of aluminum or brass so the engine isn't 100% protected from metal going through it.

Thread about magnets and oil filters

There are a bunch of posts already about oil magnets (and oil filters) on the aftermarket product board...

And don't forget about the magnet that the Hydramatic Division glued in your transmission pan. Even though the transmission is largely aluminum, they still manage to trap some of the harder (steel) particles. It's probably the harder particles that can cause the most damage, and a magnet can't hurt anything. I like the magnetic drain plugs, too. The wife's '00 AStro came with one from GM.
