How do you adjust the shift points on a 700R4 without a computer?

The car I bought for my girlfriend is an 85 trans am with a 305 holley non computer carb and 700R4. it shifts WAAAAAAAAAY to early if I try racing people by just putting it in drive. It will shift at 4,500. With the cam/header/gears that car has, it pulls solidly to 6,000 rpms. I'd like for it to at least shift at 5,500. How do I adjust it?

TV cable adjustment and/or a shift kit.

The computer has nothing to do with the shift points in that trans.

Yes, but only adjust the cable the proper way, improper will cause wrong line pressure decreasing the life of the tranny. Playing with the governor weights will work too, but go to the tranny board and search for transfixleo's method of doing it. I'd be willing to bet that is your problem.

Leave it alone. If you want to shift later, use the shift handle. That way, you can pick your shift points yourself rather than having to mess with the tranny each time you want to change it.

One of the most effective ways to change the wot shift point is to change the weights in the governor. this can be accomplished by a kit offered by Fairbanks.

or find a stock spare governor(just in case) and play around with the current one by grinding off some metal off one of the two weights on it.

good luck

The stock TV setting usually results in an early shift. Every TG with an auto I have seen does essentially the same thing. A hair's fiddling with the TV adjust will alter the shift point without resulting in trans damage. Remember an early version 700 won't take a whole lot of abuse without some work.
