what HP on a stock 400 SBC????
Does anyone know the horse power that a stock 400 SBC had (this is the block number if that helps #3951511 )
I would hope it was higher then 250HP...

They were about 180 HP. Remeber, they had crap heads, a crap cam, and a 2-barrel carb.
511 was the early block with the 3 freeze plugs in each side.

Man, that sucks... I found a 400 complete on ebay for $900 and was thinking what a good deal for that. Maybe not..:-( I think I am going to stick with my 383 stroker rebulild.

Yeah, 180 HP would not work, I am shooting for AT LEAST 350 in a motor alone... Then the old trusty NOS to push it over 500...

You don't use a stock 400 to make HP.
You use a 400 short block with better pistons, and some real heads, and a decent cam. A 400 as it comes is pitiful. If you come acros a whole one, the very first thing you do is throw away the heads. There certainly would be no point in shipping those heads around, they're the same pathetic useless garbage as various other smog 70s motors.
The last 400 short block I bought, I paid $250 for... and had a pile to select from. Don't buy stuff like that off e-Bay, that's the best way to pay entirely too much.
