Smoking and Running Like Garbage Problem
Hi All!
I have an 87 GTA with a 305 TPI engine. It is a Jasper rebuild about 10K ago. It has been flawless... until I screwed with it... hehe
Anyway, I changed to a Crane CompuCam 2032HR grind and 1.6 roller tip rockers (Comp Cam). Since I did this, the engine has started smoking a bluish-grey smoke out the pipes above idle (doesn't seem to smoke at idle except when first cranked). Seems to be missing badly as well.
I have not had any SES code UNTIL yesterday. I'm getting:
33 - High voltage (low vacuum) at mass air flow sensor (or MAP sensor)
42 - Fault at electronic spark timing circuit OR direct ignition system OR Fault at fuel cutoff relay circuit.
So is this why it's smoking?!?!? So confused... maybe I didn't connect something back correctly when we put the cam in...
Help?!?

After MANY searches, maybe changing the ignition control module is in order? Thoughts? Anyone?

Borg, maybe try replacing your MAF burnoff relay, I got those codes all the time and sometimes it would give a SES and run like sheyte , after the new relay no more probs.
Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion!
I've already replaced the MAF, power relay and the burnoff relay. I just replaced the ignition control module and now the car is running smooth again... still smoking some. Not nearly as much as it was, but still some... found a small vacuum leak as well (split hose).
I'm getting there...
Am I way off the mark on the valve floating causing the smoking? What is the max lift the stock springs can handle? The springs are only about 10K old... just rebuilt...

You might want to check or have checked your retainer to valve guide clearance. It might be so tight that the reatiner smashed the valve seals to hell and that would cause the smoke... this is important to check with cams over .460" lift.
Also a carbon/varnish deposit builds up on the valve stem after some miles that, when a new cam with more lift is popped in, chews up the seals.
Another thing is having a valve spring break which chews up the seal and causes the smoke, this is usually paired with a dead/missing cylinder...
Pretty bad, but over the last 4 years I experienced all 3 problems first hand
