engine cooling shot

ok... i was driving down the interstate and my heat guage kept bouncing up and down, i kept pulling over thinking it was overheating, but then when id go to pull over it would bounce back down, so i thought my thermostat was just doing some weird stuff or something, but then when i was leaving, on the interstate it started doing this, the throttle was weak and cause the car to vibrate making a crumpling sound when i gave it gas, then it got worse and it died pulling into a parking space. i checked the coolant before i left downtown and it was full, i get there and its almost half done, steam is coming up from the rear right hand side of the block, and no coolant is leaking. its hissing and steaming for about 40 minutes. i checked the hoses and theres no cracks or nothing and theres no coolant on the block. the only thing ive done is put an open element on it. any one have anything?
thanks

Have you checked the radiator or water pump? You may have coolant, but it's possible that it's not flowing through the system for some odd reason.

that could be it, im not sure... but coolant isnt supposed to turn brown, i replaced the radiator a little while ago because of that, is it possible that the inside of my block is rusted or severly carbonized blah. its not the radiator... maybe the 305 has had it...

I'm thinking blown head gasket, cracked head, cracked block, or leaking freeze plug?? Time for your fellow Devil Dogs to chip in some maintenance money!

Check the heater Core Area of the firewall, and verifiy that it is not leaking from there.

If it isnt, then your leak is something much more drastic. Freezeplug would be the best scenario, had that happen on mine.

A cracked head or block could also be culprit, But is fairl unlikely with these motors. I wouldnt suspect a head gasket because there is no pressure trying to force coolant to the outside of the gasket, but it is always possible.

MY vote is freezeplug, sounds very similar to my situation.

Heater core I bet. Look back by the pax side firewall and see if you see any coolant, if it hasn't already hit the Y-pipe and vaporized; also look on the pax side floorboad for any sign/smell of coolant on the carpet. I'd Bypass it as it is the best method I have found for diagnosis.

I've put in 8 years, and I've about had it with this whole mothers of America, you can't tell me what to do, I'm telling!, well you can't curse at someone so he gets away with murder, whiney, crybaby, sissy little bitch stuff. We're Marines for Christ's sake! When the hell did we start making time for group hugs?!
I expect life to be in a whole different realm on the outside. I'll be going to a university and have a plan. That is really more than I can say for most people leaving the military.

I understand what you mean. It's totally dependent on the leader the marines are under. I "grew up" in the corps in the mid 80's so I had lots of mentors from the "old" Vietnam era corps. I personally don't put up with the "feel good" form of leadership. Good luck and Semper Fi.

Yup, good to see that it's not only the Air Force that's f*cked up. I DISagree to the "kinder, gentler military service" crap that we're fed these days. Ever since that F*g Clinton allowed the Flamers in the military it ain't been right. Don't ask, Don't Tell? What the hell is that all about? How 'bout Don't tell, and I won't beat you to death with a stick? I've been in this man's Air Force for 6 years and I'm a SSgt....far too long o' service and far too much politics for too little paycheck.
